Hello Longworth Families,
April brings lots of celebrations and some fun activities for our students. Our classes will be participating in a school wide game of Battleships, spring door decorating, spring colouring contests, and a litterless lunch in honour of Earth Day.
We have designated a prayer space and an alternative space during nutrition breaks for our students who are fasting for Ramadan. If your child is fasting, please advise them to speak to their teacher about these locations.
Please continue to use the Provincial Daily Screener https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/ and follow the guidelines provided. Do not send students who are sick to school. Longworth will remain a safe and inclusive environment where everyone’s personal choice about wearing masks is respected. We continue to monitor our gastrointestinal illness outbreak.
As always, please feel free to connect with us with any questions or concerns.
Yours in education,
Sherry Richer, Vice Principal
DISMISSAL
With our gradual return to pre-pandemic conditions, we have decided as a staff to return to a regular dismissal for all. All students in grades 1-8 will dismiss at 3:35 (from their same doors). This does not affect our kindergarten dismissal which starts at 3:20.
KISS & RIDE
A reminder that our kiss & ride is for students who can exit the vehicle on their own. Parents/guardians are asked to remain in their vehicle as exiting slows down the process. The staff on duty are not there to walk kindergarten students to their doors. Please park and walk your kindergarten children to their doors. Kiss & Ride is shut down once the 9:15 bell rings.

PLANTABLES FUNDRAISER
Harold Longworth is running a brand new fundraiser through the Plantables Fundraising Program.
Who are Plantables?
Plantables are an exciting new startup based in Forest, Ontario that grow healthy, hardy and happy fruit and vegetable plants and ship them to arrive at your door exactly when they need to go into the ground.
(Generally ships within 1-4 business days and there is a minimum 6 plant order +$13.99 delivery, OR 12+ plants gets FREE delivery).
That means that no matter how busy you are, how unsuccessful you’ve been at growing plants before or how many little hands want to help out, you’ll be able to grow brag-worthy fruits and veggies in no time.
All you have to do is pick what plants you want to grow, choose when you want them delivered and wait for your box of garden-ready plants to arrive on your doorstep.
How does the program work?
All you have to do is tell everybody you know to go to https://plantables.ca/ if they want to buy garden-ready fruit and vegetable plants for their garden!
Make sure they enter the code (LONGWORTHHURRICANES) at the checkout. This fundraiser will be open until the end of May.
We’re really excited to be launching a fundraiser that involves growing healthy fruits and veggies and creating more reasons to be spending time together as a family!!
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarington is happy to announce our yearly road hockey tournament has returned! We have started planning our 10th Annual tournament for our agency, which continues to gain popularity each year. Our last tournament before COVID involved 30 teams, involving more than 200 players registered for the tournament, which included a Celebrity Team that featured two-time Stanley Cup champion Bryan Bickell and two-time Olympian Jenn Wakefield.
This year’s tournament will take place on Saturday, May 14, with games taking place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $175 per team, which works out to $25 per player for a team of seven.
Once again, we are requesting the closure of Clarington Boulevard (in front of Clarington Secondary School, behind Home Depot) to host the event. It’s a 3-on-3 format, plus goalies, seven players per team maximum, three games guaranteed and a complimentary lunch. We offer adult, open and girls’ divisions, along with great prizes.
Money raised from our fundraisers helps us provide mentoring programs to more than 500 children in Clarington. In addition to our traditional Big/Little matches, our other programs include In-School Mentoring, Big Bunch, , Go Girls, Game On and Summer Camp.
